Meet Skype English Language Partner Adam
How long have you worked as a Skype English language partner?
I have worked as a Skype English language partner for 7 years now. I have previously worked with children and adults of all ages as well as taught all levels of English. I have also worked as an Accent Reduction coach for an Indian software company where I helped engineers improve pronunciation and accent.
I have always had a passion for learning language, and speak German fluently, as well as being able to speak Thai at a good level. I know what it is like to learn a new language, and have the patience and passion to help you improve your English
Tell us about your experience working as a Skype English Language Partner for over 5 years. Where do ESL students need the most help?
My observation was that students outside the English speaking world do get sufficient grammar and basic vocabulary. Fluency seems the greatest challenge. Only by trying, failing, and not being corrected too often does it seem to develop. About 80% of my teaching focuses on this. Many elements go into fluency, but in the end, more speaking and listening lead to the ˝built in˝ corrections that lead to more fluency; the way countless immigrants learned English, even without a classroom.
Pronunciation is difficult for many. My goal is always to selectively focus on pronunciation that will cause misunderstanding. For example, if the word ˝why˝ sounds like ˝way˝ or ˝we˝ miscommunication is certain. On the other hand, the words microwave, furniture, and flat are usually understood, even if mispronounced. In classes, I often have students do role plays, communicate while sitting in a circle, or form small discussion groups. As a Skype English language partner, I have realized that fluency comes first, and we’ll get it ˝right˝ in process. It is not the other way around!
Describe a typical lesson at Spoken English Practice
First, I would like to find out what they are interested in, as well as their priorities – do they want to improve their pronunciation? Do they want to expand their vocabulary? Then, depending on their preferences, I’d start each lesson with a topic to discuss. Depending on their strengths and weaknesses, I’ll manipulate the conversation to force them to focus on their weaknesses, but not ignoring their strengths to ensure they remain confident and relaxed.
