Meet Conversational English Partner Debbie

Describe your past experience working as a conversational English partner?

I have spent two years teaching all aspects of English to dyslexic children and adults across the world with all nationalities.  Primarily this would cover conversation but would also include written work, reading, comprehension and spelling lists – all these lessons were spoken in English.

I am now enjoying working with Spoken English Practice and take much pleasure in monitoring students’ improvement in English conversation.

Tell us more about your education?

I have a Diploma in Understanding and Managing Dyslexia and have completed a 140-hour TEFL (teaching English as a foreign language) together with a 10-hour TEFL extra course in teaching English online.

How would you describe a typical Skype English language lesson at Spoken English Practice?

Speaking English is probably regarded as the most universally accepted language for both business and social engagement.  As a conversational English partner, it is my policy to assist in this ambition and give opportunity to those who wish to improve their spoken language in a confident manner.

In the early lessons, I would encourage new students to speak freely about their lives generally and their career ambitions using the English language.  Thereafter, depending upon their ability and aptitude, lessons would be adjusted accordingly to maximise their linguistic abilities.  The student’s progress will be monitored and corrections will be made at various intervals during our conversations with appropriate encouragement and guidance.

In your experience, what area in English do students need the most help?  Grammar, vocabulary, pronunciation or something else?  How would you address this in your lessons?

Students require the ability to converse in the language demonstrating an understanding of grammar, a wide vocabulary and clear pronunciation, which highlights their communication skills.  Encouragement will be given in mastering the more challenging aspects of the English language where required and I am happy to help in all areas if the students so wish.  Primarily we would start with conversation and further help would be provided via the message system incorporated in Skype should students want help with grammar and written work.

What are your top 3 tips to ESL students around the world?
