8 Free and Fun Ways to Improve English Vocabulary

Whether you learn English as a second language at school or as an adult, there are many ways that you can improve English vocabulary for free.  Some of us prefer sitting in a classroom with others whilst others prefer to learn independently.  Learning new English vocabulary will increase your confidence and encourage you to keep on learning.  Here are my 8 ways to improve English vocabulary for free:

Read English news on the Internet

This is a very easy way to listen to English conversation online.  We all have access to the Internet whether via a mobile phone, a tablet or a computer.  Try and listen to English news via the Internet as often as you can.

Label household items in each room of where you live

There are so many household items in our homes.  Label as many items of furniture in each room in English from tables, chairs, lamps, pictures, cupboards, ornaments, mirrors, glasses, cooker, fridge, plates, cups and saucers, mugs, cutlery, bedroom to bathroom fixtures and fittings.  We use all these items on a daily basis so this is a very easy way to improve English vocabulary.

Set aside a certain time three times a week to practice

By practicing English three times a week, it helps you learn your new vocabulary.  Say the words out loud to yourself and you could also record yourself saying these words and then replay the recording listening to what you have just spoken.

Use free apps on your mobile

There are several free apps on your mobile to help you learn a new language.  Duolingo is one for example.  This makes life very easy as you can practice daily or several times a week for short times at a time.  These apps start with the basics and then as you improve English, the language becomes more advanced.

There are many English movies that will help you improve English.  Start with films with English sub-titles then watch and listen to the films again in English.  Perhaps start with films you have already watched in your native language so you have the ability of knowing the story in advance.  There are some great English television series, which will give you in insight into British English history together with helping you with English vocabulary and listening to English accents.  These series include The Crown (series 2 is starting in December) and Victoria and Albert and the second series of this is on television here in the U.K. at the moment.  You can also buy these series on DVD so that you can then watch them in your own time.

Buy a bilingual dictionary

Buy a good quality bilingual dictionary, which will give you the meaning of all the new words you are learning together with showing you how to pronounce each new word.

Listen to English radio/audio books

You can listen to English radio and audio books whilst you are travelling or at home.  You can listen to these either via CD or via the Internet.  Choose a book, which you know or one that you are interested in and this will help you learn new words.

Keep a notebook of new words

Write down in a notebook all the new words you are learning together with their meanings.  Reread on a regular basis to help your learning of these new words.

By doing any or all of these, you will find your English vocabulary will improve very quickly.  Also you can meet friends who are also learning English and talk about what you are all learning over a cup of tea or coffee.  You can use or do any of these on a regular basis.
