Meet Spoken English Partner Rebecca

Describe your past experience working as a Spoken English partner

I love exploring the world while teaching and learning from others as I travel. I have been working as a Spoken English partner for over 7 years. I have taught people of all ages and all different backgrounds and truly enjoy the uniqueness every individual brings to the learning environment.

Tell us about your education

I graduated from New York University with a Bachelors of Fine Arts in Theatre and a minor in Child and Adolescent Mental Studies.  I have always been interested in education and feel my degrees allow me to bring a unique perspective to being a Spoken English partner.

How are your classes structured? How do you help students improve Spoken English?

In my classes, I really get to know my students through our conversations. I cater each class to the specific student’s needs so no two classes are the same. We will talk about subjects that are interesting and varied to expand vocabulary and increase your confidence in addressing multiple topics. We often focus on pronunciation, vocabulary, grammar, and anything else you may want to improve using different and fun techniques!

What are some of your favorite discussion topics?

I love talking about subjects that my student’s are passionate about. I also really enjoy discussing cultural differences around the world including everything from food, traditions, and art.

Where do you think students need the most help?

As a Spoken English Partner, I think the area in which English students need the most help is in building confidence. What holds most people, who are already at a high level, back from progressing in English, is that they are afraid of making mistakes. However, making mistakes while speaking is how we learn! I know it can be very intimidating so very important to me to create a safe space in my classes so you can feel free to make mistakes. Practicing also builds confidence, which is why having multiple classes per week is most beneficial to you.

What are some tips you would like to share with ESL students?

Practice makes perfect. No, seriously! The more you force yourself to speak in English, the faster you will see an improvement in yourself.

Don’t be afraid to make mistakes. Most people are their own worst critic. Don’t be too hard on yourself. Everyone makes mistakes; it’s how we learn

Exposing yourself to English in multiple ways while keeping it fun, will be very helpful! Watch TV and movies in English, listen to music in English, listen to books on tape in English, or whatever other media forms you enjoy- expose yourself to it in English!

Outside of teaching English, what are your hobbies?

In addition to being passionate about teaching, I love to sing, dance, and act. I’ve been in many professional off-Broadway musicals. I also love dogs and spending time with my family.

What type of students do you prefer?

I prefer students who are excited about learning! If you have already stumbled across Spoken English Practice, that means you have enough self motivation to be successful and you are the type of student I love working with!
