5 easy things you can do at home to improve Spoken English
[one_second] It is fair to say that almost all English language learners agree that the best way to improve Spoken English is to practice speaking with natives. That said, if you want to see results really fast, you need to immerse yourself fully in the English language, so that the practice sessions with your English language partner becomes even more productive. Here are some simple but effective things you can do at home to improve Spoken English fast.

(1) Find two or three friends who also want to improve Spoken English and agree to meet with them at least once a week to chat. It’s lots of fun, and you’ll be pleased to see how just a few minutes will reinforce your language skills! We recommend at least 30 minutes…more if it’s convenient. Try to find people whose language skills are at least as good as yours, if not better. Use your native language to ask for help with a word, of course, but switch right back to English.
(2) Rent a movie with an English sound track and subtitles in your own language to bridge any gap in vocabulary. Choose a movie that interests you for whatever reason: the theme or plot, the setting, or the actors or director. The subtitles well help you for sure, but you want to focus your attention on the sound of the English dialogue.
(3) Do the same thing with a movie that interests you, but select English subtitles to support your understanding of the spoken English dialogue. Have fun with the different accents, too! English spoken with a Scottish accent sounds very different from English spoken in the American South, y’all!
(4) When you see a sign on a place of business or, perhaps, an advertisement on a city bus or billboard, translate it into English and say the English word aloud. Then say aloud a short sentence about the store or advertisement. You want your brain to actually hear the words as you speak them aloud. For example, “I’m walking by a PHARMACY. I have been inside before, but I’m not going in today.” Okay, that was two sentences, but you get the idea. It’s fun! And as you hear yourself speaking English aloud about ordinary places and events, you’ll begin to think in English.
(5) Find some English language books written for children or young adults and read them aloud. Even more fun, if you know a child or teenager who would enjoy it, read aloud in English to them. And if they speak a little English, ask them questions about the book–in English –and let them have a turn reading aloud, too.
Remember, improving English speaking is a process. Just like going to the gym + healthy diet accelerates weight loss, simple exercises such as these alone with practicing with a native speaker is the best way to achieve faster results. In other words, the more you can immerse yourself in the English language, the faster you will improve Spoken English.
