  1. The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn by Mark Twain is a quintessential American adventure story set in the mid eighteen hundreds and is recognised for it’s vibrant descriptions of people and places. The story is told from Huckleberry’s perspective and describes how he rebels against his guardians attempts to “civilise” him and how life changes with the appearance of his alcoholic father. The book explores education, the concept of civilised society and race relations at the time. This is definitely a must read for anyone trying to widen their knowledge on American English.
  2. The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald is a literary classic set in the Roaring Twenties and is as flamboyant as the time in which it takes place. The novella gives the reader a snapshot of a significant era in American History characterised by economic prosperity and post war freedoms. Nick’s narration describes endless parties, wealth and love; as events slowly unravel some of the mystery that is Jay Gatsby is revealed. Fitzgerald explores the idea of a greedy and shallow wealthy upper class and the unravelling of the American dream.
  3. The Old Man and the Sea by Ernest Hemingway is a Pulitzer Prize winning novel and Hemingway’s last major piece of fiction. The story is a simple one, describing the battle between an old fisherman and his battle to reel in a large marlin after months of not catching anything. This battle of wills is a reflection of the strength of the human spirit, the desire to never give up and the pride and honor found therein. The simple writing and beautiful descriptions enhance the story’s symbolism.
  4. A Streetcar Named Desire, a play by Tennessee Williams. Williams crafts a tale of fantasy versus reality where the protagonist, Blanche, refuses to accept the hand life has dealt her and attempts to construct her own reality. The play is an insight into family dynamics, domestic violence and lost dreams.
  5. 1984 by George Orwell is the classic “Big Brother” novel which is still frequently referenced in modern society. The story describes a dystopian society created by the ruling party after a global war. It’s a world where thoughts are manipulated and history rewritten, no one has the freedom to do as they please.

 

Part of becoming an advanced English speaker is the ability to understand cultural references and these classic books will certainly help develop that understanding. Additionally they will expand your vocabulary and make it easier for you to talk about things in a sophisticated and suave manner.
