Meet Native English Teacher Regina

Tell us a bit about your past experiences teaching English

I was exposed to teaching English and American culture when my family hosted exchange students from Denmark and Japan while I was growing up. I found a passion in sharing my native language with others. Throughout college and now in the professional world, I enjoy being an English tutor and hosting conversation hours for children and adults.

Tell us more about your education?

Language and technology are two subjects that I love, especially when working with them together! I graduated from the University of Wisconsin with a degree in Spanish and Information Systems. I continue to further my education in these two topics as often as I can.

How would you describe a typical English lesson at Spoken English Practice?

While I lived abroad, I learned the importance of conversation when learning a new language. It was essential to understanding idioms, mastering an accent and perfecting pronunciation. This, and more, is what I have planned for our English lessons! We will talk just like we are chatting over a hot drink in a coffee shop. We’ll discuss hobbies, life, culture, and things going on in our daily lives. I am a patient person and we’ll have an open and honest conversation without judgement, only encouragement and helpful feedback.

What are your favorite conversation topics?

I love learning about new things and getting to know new people. Some of my favorite conversation topics are food, travel, technology, TV shows and funny stories. I like when students share about their own culture and hobbies. We’ll also talk about new trending words and phrases in the English language like slang. My friends tell me that I am easy to get along with and easy to talk with. I have some great conversation topics that will get us started!

In your experience, what area in English do students need the most help? Grammar, vocabulary, pronunciation or something else? How would you address this in your classes?

I think the areas that most students need help with are vocabulary, accent and pronunciation. In your lessons, we’ll practice commonly mispronounced words. You’ll also learn new vocabulary and different phrases to express the same sentiment. That being said, I understand that everyone’s learning style is different. Each lesson will be customized so that it is beneficial in the path to accomplishing your goals.

What are your top 3 tips to ESL students around the world?

  • Don’t take yourself too seriously. Have fun and try not to get frustrated. Learning English Speaking takes time. Don’t be afraid to make a mistake or say something incorrectly.
  • Have conversations in English. Have as many as you can. It may sound silly, but try talking to yourself in the mirror.
  • Listen to music in English. Listen to the words and sing along to the songs. If you don’t understand the lyrics or certain words, look them up.

A little bit about what you like to do when you are not teaching English.

When I’m not teaching English or solving technology issues as a technology consultant, I can be found spending time with my husband by a campfire, listening to live music at a local brewery, cooking new foods with my supper club or relaxing in my hammock.

What kind of students do you prefer?

I am open to all students of any age or background. As long as you are willing to learn, practice and have fun, I look forward to teaching you!
