The 3 Key Concepts behind Improving Spoken English Fluency
Learning English for years but not improving Spoken English fluency? You are probably studying English the wrong way. Learning to speak English is not like learning theoretical languages like History or Economics. You can’t learn to speak by memorizing theory. Learning to speak English is more like learning to ride a bike or learning swimming. You need to learn by doing.
In this blog post, we will discuss 3 key principles behind improving Spoken English fluency.
Find the right balance between Fluency and Accuracy
The main reason one learns a language is to communicate. Whether through reading, writing, speaking or listening the goal is to communicate through language. Never forget that fluency is the root of communication.
Without the ability and confidence to output language (write/speak) a language leaner will not be able to communicate their ideas & concepts. With fluency people are able to output, maybe not perfectly, however to a point where the listener or reader will be able to gain the main idea of their communication.
At Spoken English Practice we strongly believe that accuracy comes after fluency . Accuracy is important in the ability to communicate due to the need to correctly describe what is meant to be communicated; however, without the confidence or fluency to begin communication, communication would not be enough to be meaningful.
If your objective is improving Spoken English fluency, focus on fluency, not accuracy. Once you become more fluent in English, accuracy will follow.
Improving Spoken English fluency begins from speaking a lot…
With that in mind, always understand that you will make mistakes at times when improving Spoken English fluency. The first thing you need to know is that you won’t start off speaking English perfectly. People that have been speaking it their entire lives still make simple mistakes at times. Do not let the idea of making a mistake slow you down or scare you.
Always speak confidently, even if you are prone to making a few mistakes. Speaking more will build confidence, fluency and accuracy in the long term. Not speaking with stop you from making any progress. Practicing is the only way you will master the English language, and people will be much more willing to help you along the way if you are willing to put yourself out there, flaws and all.
Your need a teacher who will be a Conversation Partner
If you goal is to just pass English exams like TOEFL you can use memorization techniques and prepare for these exams. However, if your goal is improving Spoken English fluency find a English teacher who works more like a conversation partner than a teacher.
If you can find a teacher who conducts classes like a professor you will only learn grammar rules and the theoretical aspects of English. You will not speak in class – you will be only taking notes. This approach works well if you are learning Biology or Economics but will not be efficient when improving Spoken English fluency.
You need to find a teacher who uses a conversation approach. Your teacher must give corrections when you make mistakes but he/she must not to correct you all the time – you simply will not remember every correction, so it is better to develop confidence rather than worrying about mistakes. Remember, rule number 1 – fluency is more important than accuracy.
