Meet Native English Teacher Teresa
Tell us a bit about your past experiences as an English Teacher
For the past 2 ½ years I have been traveling the world doing volunteer and intercambio exchanges including teaching/tutoring English in many one-to-one and small group settings. My concentration has been on conversational English though I have also provided tutoring for students following the Cambridge English (or similar) instruction and testing format.
Tell us more about your education?
As an older adult committed to world travel, I have attended university for foreign language study. My language skills have excelled most successfully through immersion.
How would you describe a typical English lesson at Spoken English Practice?
My typical English lessons via Spoken English Practice are relaxed and supportive. We follow a format of discussion on mutually agreed upon topics followed by corrections as necessary regarding vocabulary, delivery, and pronunciation.
What are your favorite conversation topics?
I enjoy conversations about world cultures, travel, personal development, arts and creativity, communications and business.
In your experience, what area in English do students need the most help? Grammar, vocabulary, pronunciation or something else?
As with learning any new language, I find that developing the self-confidence to deliver understandable communication is key. The best way to develop self-confidence is to practice speaking and listening… a lot!
As an English Teacher, what are your top 3 tips to ESL students around the world?
The best habit in learning English is to dedicate yourself to practicing a little each day.
Find a friend, tutor, or teacher with whom you can have English conversations on a regular basis.
Practice your listening skills by listening to English music and watching English movies/TV.
A little bit about what you like to do when you are not teaching English.
I am a traveler. I enjoy hiking, dancing, nature, the arts, and volunteering. I am a freelance consultant; I provide proofreading and administrative services online.
What kind of students do you prefer?
I enjoy students of different cultural backgrounds with a broad range of interests.
