7 Things to help Children Speak English Confidently and Fluently

Want your children speak English confidently and fluently like native English speakers? Want your children to speak English with perfect Accent and Grammar? Check these 7 innovative things you can do to help children speak English perfectly.

Do not correct every mistake

Encourage your children to speak English as much as possible by asking open ended questions and allowing them room for discussions on their topics of interests. Avoid correcting every mistake. If you interrupt the child and current them every time they speak English, they will never learn to speak English confidently and fluently.

If your child asks for help, there is no harm offering them alternative ways to express what they want to say. However, the knowledge and experience they get by communicating ideas full in English is what will give them confidence.

Do not send your children to Elocution Classes

Elocution classes are very popular, specially in Asia. There are elocution teachers who specialize in helping children improve pronunciation and accent.

However, elocution is an outdated teaching method that relies on a lot of repetition and memorization. Most elocution teachers will make movements with their mouth and lips, and ask students to copy what they are doing. This process can frustrate most children.

If you want to help Children Speak English Confidently and Fluently find a Native English Teacher and practice Conversational English with them.

Improve Spoken English Naturally

Practice English Speaking in an informal setting

Sometimes it is difficult to speak another language, though you may understand it well. Encouraging children to talk and just put it out there, without judgments being made, is very imporant. It can be intimidating or embarrassing to try to speak English  so practice in an informal setting can help.

Always remember how children learn their first language. It is through informal conversation, not studying. If you want to help children speak English confidently, give them more opportunities to have real conversations in English.

Expose children to Native English Speakers early

Pronunciation is difficult. Take for example ‘comb’, ‘bomb’, and ‘tomb’. When reading them the endings are all the same, and many ESL could struggle with this.

Pronunciation is one of the things that can be fixed with listening to Native English speakers. Passive listening is great for learning but pronunciation needs to be corrected with active listening of Native English speakers.

Good news is there are lots of free resources you can use like Sesame Street and British Council For Kids.

Practice Speaking a lot; Don’t focus on Grammar

The best way to learn English is by practicing with Native speakers. Grammar and vocabulary are things you can learn in your own time, at your own pace. But this knowledge fades quickly when not put in use. Combining grammar and vocabulary with real conversational skills is the way to master a language.

English grammar can be quite confusing, but this is best learned through natural conversation, so that a more intuitive understanding of the language can develop. Don’t force children to memorize grammar rules. Make them learn grammar through natural conversations.

Use fun ways to teach new English words to children

English students first need vocabulary, which is vital to constructing verbal sentences in the first place.  Without the vocabulary knowledge, there really is not conversation to be had.

Utilizing games and other activities such as Lego is a great way to enhance children’s vocabulary. Make vocabulary building FUN and don’t just reply on textbooks.

Children learn differently

Last but not the least, remember that every child learns differently Approach each student’s problem area and figure out the best method to help them fix their errors. Make sure that we take our time and practice whatever area that they are in need of fixing whether it is help with listening, comprehension, grammar or pronunciation.

If you want to help children speak English confidently and fluently, be there for them and help them improve everyday!
