5 Practical Ways to Improve English Speaking Skills in your own time

In this post we wanted to discuss some practical methods that will help you improve English speaking  skills in your own time. You don’t need to find separate time or a partner to perform these actions. The key is to build learning English in to your life-style so that you immerse yourself in the English language. Here are some practical ideas:

1.)   Read aloud for 20 minutes every day:

If you have want to improve English speaking skills, buy an English newspaper every day and read aloud for 20 minutes. This exercise will help the muscles in your mouth acclimatize to the different sounds associated with the English language. Remember, not all languages are created equal and there are some sounds in the English language that are not very common in other languages.

2.)   Listen to an audio books in English on your way to work:

On the way to work, rather than listening to music, listen to an audio book. Listening to an audio book not only improves your listening skills, but also can improve your understanding skills. In other words, it can help you to understand when others speak to you in English. If you have a British Council locally, check it out to borrow audio bools for free.

3.)   Choose the English language when calling customer service!

When calling customer service, if you are given the choice to pick English as a language option, always do so. Doing this will help you have a real world conversation in English at no additional cost. Remember, every little bit of practice you get matters! Of course, don’t try this in an emergency or when you are are calling for something critical!

Try to learn a new word every day. It increases your English vocabulary as well as your interest in the process of learning the English language. Don’t worry whether you are using this word in conversations you are having in English. You will, eventually. Learning new words will also help you feel good about the progress you are making as a non-native English speaker trying to learn spoken English.

5.)   Learn the lyrics of an English song and sing along:

Music is a universal language and everyone enjoys listening to songs. Try learning the lyrics of an English song and sing alone. Just like reading a newspaper out loud, singing will help the muscles in your mouth get used to English pronunciation patterns. It will also help you develop confidence by hearing your own voice.
